Brad called me and asked if I would help the safety and health folks at his company (Cabot Corporation) give more interesting annual training. That’s my forte (plus it was another gig) so I gave Brad a resounding yes!  Cabot’s annual training included a mix of safety, health and security topics. I spruced up everyone’s slides and created some new ones that were fun and innovative.

For example, each respiratory protection slide had a famous entertainer explaining an aspect of Cabot’s respiratory protection program. My favorite slide showed a cartoon caricature of Mick Jagger saying “You can’t always get what you want, but should get a respirator that has been cleaned and inspected.” I also helped them create activities that added energy to the day and I coached the instructors on ways to improve their presentation skills. The training was much more engaging than previous years and Brad was pleased.

The following year Brad called me again. Same deal. When I met with the trainers at a restaurant to create a concept I told them that this year’s training was going to stretch their skills but would be the best and most memorable  training  their employees had ever experienced. Not many slides. Mostly skits, competitions, and other activities based on a theme.

We created the “Safety Olympics.”

Could not have been a more fun learning experience. Not only was the training a grand success but it also improved the reputation of Cabot’s safety and health staff.

Every trainer was a different Greek Olympics type character. Three members of the cast:

Tim Hornic Helen of Trauma

John Eves
The “events” included an “Environmental Challenge,” “Chemical Contest, “Hot Work Card Toss,” and my favorite “The Tale of Ergonopolis.”

I’ve also created a “Safety Olympic” for Safety Days. Rather than just walking around or sitting in chairs, everyone competes in teams based on various safety and health topics.
