children playgroundHere is a small playground around the corner from my house. When I first moved into this neighborhood 20 years ago, the playground was regularly used. Most summer days (and nice weather afternoons during school months) there were at least a few children playing on the swings and sliding board or running around in the open grass area. Now, it’s rare to see anyone.

There are plenty of children in my neighborhood. But the only time you see them is when they’re getting off the bus. No doubt most, if not all of the kids are home watching something on a screen. It’s one reason they are growing up overweight.

I don’t need to give you many statistics or proof about the problem because you already know that we’ve become an overweight and obese nation. Just one: We’re the third fattest country barely behind Palau, a small island in the West Pacific, and Kuwait. Our children, if the trend of not being active and having a lousy diet continues, will probably put us in first place in a few years. It’s one of the most important health issues in the U.S. As adults it also affects our safety. One example is how obesity contributes to back and joint pain.

That’s why it’s a great idea to include tips on ways to get your children away from a screen and move as part of your safety and health marketing. Even if you only include the topic as a part of a safety meeting, rest assured some of the folks in your audience will appreciate it.

If you’d like to hire me to create an interesting, fun and informative presentation on this or any other safety and health topic send me a message: richard@makesafetyfun.com.

Hope to hear from you so, we can create something that will make a positive difference in your employees’ lives.

’till next time.
